Muskogee Public Schools receives more than $1M in grants from Oklahoma nonprofit

MUSKOGEE, Okla. — Muskogee Public Schools announced the district received over $1 million in grant funding from the William Barry Love Foundation.

MPS said the $1,081,900 in funding underscores the nonprofit’s mission to empower Muskogee’s students and youth while strengthening the community for generations to come.

The commitment will support innovative district initiatives to expand literacy programs, strengthen afterschool learning and expand access to higher education for students.

“The generosity of the William Barry Love Foundation is transformative for our district. These programs will touch students at every level—from early literacy to college readiness, while also supporting our teachers and families,” said Dr. Jarod Mendenhall, Superintendent of Muskogee Public Schools. “We are profoundly grateful for this partnership and what it means for Muskogee’s students.”

With this announcement, the nonprofit’s total giving to the district reaches $1,245,376 since the first grants were awarded in 2024.

MPS said programs supported by the 2025 grants include:

  • Higher Learning Opportunities ($187,500): Launching Muskogee Public Schools’ Early College High School in partnership with Connors State College.
  • Pershing After School Program ($100,00): Delivering research-based reading and math support, along with STEM and social-emotional learning for K-5 students.
  • Elementary Reading & Math Interventionists ($694,400): Funding 10 new interventionists, one math and one reading specialist at each elementary school, to provide intensive, data-driven support for students below grade level.
  • 6th/7th Grade Roughers Extended Day Program ($100,000): Extending afterschool tutoring, art, STEM and physical education opportunities to middle school students.

The William Barry Love Foundation carries forward the vision of its namesake, longtime president and CEO of Love Bottling Company, by dedicating a portion of the company’s profits to support Muskogee’s youth and families through local organizations and nonprofits.

“This grant reflects our mission to ensure every student in Muskogee has access to the opportunities and support they need to thrive,” said James Gulley, President of the William Barry Love Foundation, and President & CEO of Love Bottling Company. “William Barry Love built his life and legacy here, and this is one way we continue honoring his vision for Muskogee’s future.”
